1. The Maine State Youth Council has extended their Advisor search deadline
until July 27th.
Due to recent relocations and resignations the State Youth Council (SYC) is
looking to add two advisors to its ranks. Ideally they will both be female as
the current advisors are both male. One of the new advisors has to be a clergy
member in good standing with the Maine Conference of the UCC. The other may
be a lay person. Below is a link to the SYC Advisor page. There you will find
more information about what is involved in the Advisor position, and a downloadable
application packet. If you're interested in helping the SYC, please download
the application packet and return it by July 27th. http://mainesyc.org/advisors.html
2. Now that we are on vacation, we probably don’t want to think about fall. However, fall is rapidly approaching, and that means the Maine Conference Annual Meeting. This year’s Annual Meeting theme is “Let Your Life Shine” and our keynote speakers are David Shoen, Coordinator of the Congregational Vitality Initiative, and Edith Guffey, Assoc. General Minister of the United Church of Christ. We will gather at the Grand Resort Hotel, Sunday River in Bethel on September 28 – 30, 2007 for fellowship, worship and prayerful consideration of the business of the Conference. Please take a minute to review the tentative Agenda, registration forms and other important information concerning the 2007 Annual Meeting are available on our website at www.maineucc.org/annualmeeting/2007/frontpage.htm.
3. How did your congregation follow up on the resolutions passed at last year’s Annual Meeting? We would like you to share what your church family did to follow up on the “Quality and Equality of Marriage” and the “Fair Trade/Fairly Traded Coffee” resolutions. Please send a brief (100 word) description of how your congregation acted on one of these resolutions, to Sue Stevens at the Conference Office. Sue will gather the responses together and post them on the Conference website for everyone to read. Several will be chosen to be read aloud during the “Speak Out’ sessions during the 2007 Annual Meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Sue at suestevens@maineucc.org or call the Conference Office.
4. Not at Synod? Take a look at the Conference website for copies of Barack Obama’s and Bill Moyer’s speeches, pictures supplied by Tom Hancock, and memorable moments at Synod supplied by some of our Delegates. I hope it will give you a flavor of the spirit that moved during that incredible gathering.
5. The Resource Center already has a copy of the General Synod 26 Wrap-Up DVD available for loan, and we have a number of General Synod presentations in DVD format on order. We will have all four major keynotes (Bill Moyers, Barack Obama, Marian Wright Edelman, and Lynn Redgrave), as well as Walter Brueggeman's presentation. For those who didn't attend Synod, I would highly recommend the Moyers, Redgrave, and Brueggeman presentations for use in adult forums and studies. Bill Moyers' prophetic call to action was named by many Synod attendees as their highlight of a very rich and inspiring Synod experience. Lynn Redgrave's testimony about her own experience with breast cancer and the role the church played in that was a deeply moving reminder of the pastoral power of the church. And renowned teacher of the church Brueggeman was in fine form. Please don't let these DVD's sit idle on the Resource Center shelves. Schedule them for an adult program in your church.
